On one hand I would like it if they did, on the other I am opposed to it on the principal that I believe in a free and open internet and I dont want the government policing content.

Same debate as the Patriot Act, ultimately: is the sacrifice of freedoms in the interest of security something we as a people can live with?

I personally am concerned just for the security issues that are prevalent with unmonitored advertising but the improvement of standards of advertising would be a nice side effect. Somewhere someone on the chain is just laying back and letting it happen and the end users pay for it with intrusive and possibly dangerous content being loaded on their devices.

The only way were going to see the end of hijack mobile ads is if a third-party authority steps in and mandates the advertising networks rigorously police the content that gets put in. There is no incentive internally for ad networks to do anything about their lackadaisical vetting because they were already paid for the ad space.

Online advertising is intolerable because of how scummy it has become (annoyance and ostentatiousness are bad things but not something the government necessarily needs to regulate, even if the user experience is being stifled heavily by obnoxious ads). Dubious advertisers slipping in embedded code and forcing people to look at products without any way to decline is a violation of consumer rights and digital security, which is an arena the government is beholden to enforce.
